Fothergill

A solar-powered luxury safari camp on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe's Matusadona National Park.

About Fothergill

Fothergill is a luxury safari camp on the shores of Lake Kariba within Zimbabwe's Matusadona National Park. Named after Rupert Fothergill — the legendary game warden behind Operation Noah, the 1958 wildlife rescue that relocated thousands of animals as the Kariba dam flooded the valley — the camp sits squarely within Zimbabwe's most evocative conservation history. It is operated by Off The Track Safaris, with a hands-on owner-operator philosophy and a strong conservation partnership with African Parks, which now manages Matusadona.

The setting is the differentiator. Most Zimbabwe itineraries skip Kariba entirely — heading from Hwange straight to Mana Pools or Vic Falls. Fothergill makes the case for why Kariba is the missing piece. Game drives across the floodplains. Walking safaris through mopane woodland. Boating safaris on Lake Kariba — the second-largest man-made lake in Africa — with elephants, hippos and exceptional bird life along the shore. Tiger fishing for the keen angler. And a position physically sandwiched between Hwange and Mana Pools that makes a three-camp Zimbabwe circuit suddenly very natural.

The camp itself is built around five individual luxury suites and two family suites in the main camp, plus the three-suite Little Fothergill which can be booked exclusively for families or small groups with a private guide and chef. Ninety-five percent of the camp's energy is solar. The architecture sits lightly on the landscape — open canvas, locally crafted wooden furnishings, private decks and plunge pools at every suite.

For UK trade partners, Fothergill solves a real itinerary problem: the missing third camp in a Zimbabwe circuit. At AATE 2026, the team will be at Pall Mall to talk routings, family availability, and the conservation work being done with African Parks across the wider Matusadona National Park.
